Institutional Forces that Influence Higher ICT-education in India
(2005)
For several years, academics have debated the extent to which information and communication technologies (ICTs) can aid developing countries. The conversation contains diverse views, but education is always given a prominent role. Using neo-institutional theory, my research attempts to examine ICT-education in more depth to see how it influences the developmental impact of ICTs. I have chosen to focus on higher education in India, and my initial results suggest that due to the interplay of local and global institutional forces, the developmental impact is actually hindered by higher education - which is markedly Western-focused and technocratic.
