Availability and restrictions

The course is compulsory for the MPhil/PhD students of the Information Systems and Innovation Group, Department of Management. Optional for the MSc Analysis and Design of Information Systems and MSc in Media and Communications, MSc in Media and Communications Research Track, MSc in Media and Communications: Media and Communication Governance.

A good knowledge of social science literature, and information and media studies is required.

Core syllabus

The course is concerned with the social and organizational implications of the diffusion of information and the internet. A central theme of the course is how information and the technologies by which it is produced and disseminated becomes a pervasive governing regime by means of which organizational operations are planned and organizational outcomes monitored. Also due attention is paid to the changing profile of skills and professional practices that result from the diffusion of information systems and devices and the involvement of the internet in organizational and community life.

Course content

The course is structured around a number of themes. Each of the themes is introduced and elaborated in relation to the appropriate critical literature and its relevance for practice is explored.

Methods of assessment

3 hour closed book examination in the Summer term, 100% to the final grade. 2 out of 5 questions to be answered in essay style..
