MSc Information Systems and Organisations (Research)—ISOR
ISOR is a 12 month course. The aim of the programme is to provide graduate students with the necessary skills to conduct high quality research. An important objective therein is to be able to read, understand and evaluate other's research output. In combining the groups knowledge and skills of research in the area of Information Systems and Organization Studies with the general research expertise of the Methodology Institute we have designed an MSc that combines both general and specific knowledge and expertise.
The philosophy of the programme is one that seeks to combine concerns about epistemological issues with practical aspects of data collection and interpretation. MSc ISOR students will have an introduction to data collection techniques. These along with the introduction to epistemology will provide a basis for understanding both: what datasets represent; and what sort of wider validity claims can be built on different kinds of empirical material. Students will learn to comprehend and evaluate the distinctive character of qualitative and quantitative research and how the use of qualitative or quantitative evidence is related to wider epistemological positions. In line with the overall orientation of the Information Systems Group and the School the programme provides an alternative to dry techniques-driven MSc programmes and gives balanced consideration to both epistemological issues, data collection and interpretation techniques.
