The rapid spread of ICTs for domestic use has the potential to include or further exclude people who are already socially excluded. This seminar will present some of the findings from the ESRC, e-society programme PENCEIL (How People ENCounter E-ILiteracy and can action to overcome it) Project. Previous research into social exclusion has taken little account of technology and technology research has little concern with social exclusion, but social and digital exclusion interact and co-create. We will discuss how non-users of ICTs encounter and make sense of the technologies and our experience in designing and teaching a curriculum aimed at addressing the issues uncovered in our research.

Background papers for this seminar are available on the Penceil project site

Please note places will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis - registration is not required.
