Welcome to The Gender Institute!

Page contents > Address and Contacts:

The Gender Institute was established in 1993 to address the major intellectual challenges posed by contemporary changes in gender relations. This remains a central aim of the Institute today, which is the largest research and teaching unit of its kind in Europe. The Gender Institute in interested in mapping and intervening in the gendered nature of social processes, and believes that an integrated interdisciplinary and global approach is needed to do so.

In this context, the research conducted at the Gender Institute is united by its concern with the relationship between theory and practice and with the changing nature of ideas. Faculty and researchers examine gender from a variety of feminist perspectives, and seek to contribute to the transformation of inequality through their work. Our research falls under three broad strands, and we work both independently and collaboratively within these themes:

  • Globalisation, Development and Inequality

  • Security, Rights and Social Justice

  • Representation and Cultural Change

In its combined research foci, the Institute is unique, bringing together social sciences and humanities approaches in order to address key problems in gender studies transnationally.
