IBSS
boosts coverage of French social science journals
The International
Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) and the Bibliothèque de Sciences
Po in Paris (Sciences Po) have launched a joint project to incorporate into
IBSS French journal article records compiled at Sciences Po. Inclusion of
this data will greatly enhance IBSS’s international coverage, bringing to
the service material from around 400 additional French language journals.
Most of this material is from the field of political science, though much of
it also has considerable relevance for IBSS’s other core disciplines of
economics, sociology and anthropology.
The project was first
proposed in 2002 by the Library Directors of LSE and Sciences Po, and was
conceived in the spirit of increasing cooperation between the London School
of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where IBSS is based, and Sciences
Po. In particular, the project
aims to support the goal of the Nereus consortium,
of which both institutions are members, to create integrated access
to the content-rich resources of key economics libraries, academic
publications and e-resources in Europe and abroad.
“I am delighted that two of Europe's leading social
science institutions have been able to collaborate in this way” said Jean
Sykes, Librarian and Director of IT Services at LSE and Director of IBSS.
“The inclusion of material from Sciences Po will greatly enhance IBSS's
coverage and will benefit the international social sciences community as a
whole”.
Michel
Gardette, Director of Sciences Po Library, commented that “Sciences Po is
particularly pleased that the excellent work of our library staff, who index
and abstract articles from journals in our Library collection, will in
future reach a wider audience through IBSS”.
Most
of the material indexed at Sciences Po is in French and the majority of
records include a French language abstract written by librarians at Sciences
Po. IBSS will add an English title translation and English keywords to all
records, thus making them both accessible to an English language user base
and fully cross-searchable with the material indexed in-house by IBSS. The
first records from Sciences Po entered IBSS Online in October 2005 and by
the end of 2005 approximately 3,000 records will have been incorporated.
IBSS has historic
connections with both Sciences Po and LSE. From its inception in 1951 until
1989 IBSS was compiled at Sciences Po in Paris.
In 1989 IBSS moved to the British Library of Political and Economic
Science at LSE. By 1993 the new IBSS office had indexed some 600,000 new
records, bringing the total in the database to about 1.4 million records
dating back to 1951. It was at
this stage that the first steps were taken towards making the data available
in electronic formats. Today IBSS Online includes over two million records
dating back to 1951 and each year some 100,000 new records are added.

Notes for
editors
Founded in 1896, the Library of the London
School of Economics and Political Science responds to around 5,000 visits
from students and staff each day. In addition, it provides a specialist
national and international research collection, serving over 12,000
registered external users. The
Library collects material on a worldwide basis, in all major European
languages. The extensive collections range from a European Documentation
Centre to 90,000 historical pamphlets, with over 95% of Library stock
available on open access. 50 km of shelving house over four million items
including 31,000 past and present journal titles. The Library subscribes to
approximately 15,000 e-journals, just part of its electronic information
provision.
Created in 1872, the Sciences Po Library is the main
working tool for students and academic staff and has been so from the
beginning. The Library is also open to a large number of readers from
outside the institution (presently about 20% of the 9,000 card holders). For
more than sixty years it has made available one of the richest collections
of books and periodicals in the field of social sciences in Europe. Today
the Library offers its readers access to more than 900,000 printed volumes,
650,000 of which are books, 11,000 titles of French and foreign serials
(4,000 current subscriptions); 30 online databases providing access to the
full text of more than 700 electronic serials; 18,000 press clipping files
as well as 180,000 serial articles indexed and abstracted in its online
database (approximately 9,500 articles are added each year).
IBSS
is an important online resource for
social science and interdisciplinary research. It includes over
two million bibliographic references to journal articles, books, reviews and
selected chapters dating back to 1951. IBSS focuses mainly on the four core
social science disciplines - anthropology, economics, politics and sociology
– but it also covers a number of interdisciplinary subjects, such as
development studies, human geography and environment, and gender studies.
IBSS is especially strong on international material with 25 per cent of
references in languages other than English. Over 2,600 journals are
regularly indexed and some 7,000 books included each year. IBSS is produced
by the Library at LSE and is available free of charge to UK HE/FE
institutions, ESRC recognised research institutes and government departments
as a result of funding by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Nereus is an international network
of excellence of leading European economics information providers and
brokers. It will serve to gather and build on expertise in information and
knowledge provision methods and services of value to the researcher in
Europe and abroad.
Nereus aims to make first-rate academic information accessible to the global
academic community, irrespective of the information source's location, type
or format. Nereus currently
has 14 members which are all leading economics universities in Europe.

Academic Institutions to Access IBSS via Ovid
Ovid
to host bibliographic database, IBSS, on its popular SilverPlatter and Ovid
Gateway platforms
London
(May 9, 2005) — Ovid
Technologies and the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS)
today announced that Ovid has won the contract to be the exclusive provider
of IBSS to the UK Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE) community
beginning the summer of 2005.
The UK
user community - UK HE/FE institutions, recognised research institutes and
government departments - will continue to benefit from access to IBSS free

Each institution will be able to choose whether to offer their users access
to IBSS via the SilverPlatter or the Ovid Gateway interfaces provided by
Ovid,
an internationally recognised leader of electronic medical, scientific, and

The
decision to offer IBSS via Ovid comes in response to feedback from IBSS
users about their online research needs. Users will benefit from advanced
features to support both novice and expert users, as well as integration
with other Ovid and SilverPlatter information resources available at each
institution, many of which will be complementary to IBSS.
“IBSS
users will be able to take advantage of SilverPlatter’s and Ovid Gateway’s unique range of precision search functionality,” said Rossella
Proscia, Ovid Executive Director, Academic. “In addition, institutions
using our universal link resolver, Ovid LinkSolver, will benefit from links
to hundreds of full text journals from publishers and subscription services,
library catalogues and other local resources, regardless of their platform
selection.”
“We
are delighted that Ovid’s state-of-the-art interfaces will fulfill our
users’ needs for flexible full text linking, alerting services and
advanced searching options,” notes Jean Sykes, Librarian
and Director of Information Services at LSE and Director of IBSS. “With
its unique international and historic coverage, IBSS is ideally placed to
support the changing research needs of the UK’s social scientists and to
underpin the work of the ESRC. Ovid’s expertise will help ensure that
IBSS’s online presence continues to develop and to provide a high quality
