Brief description of blog competition
Write a post for the IBSS blog at
http://ibssblog.wordpress.com
for the chance to win a prize. Five prizes of £100 each will be awarded for
the contributions which are judged to demonstrate best how IBSS online has
been used to find background information for a post on a topical social
science issue. The winning entries will be posted on the IBSS blog. The
competition is open to anyone interested in the social sciences and who
studies at a school, college or university, or works for a
governmental, not-for-profit or commercial organisation.

institutions, or people working for a

How to enter

The aim of the IBSS blog is to
look at topical issues through the lens of social science research using
articles and books indexed on IBSS. It also aims to demonstrate to users the
breadth of material available on IBSS.
You can visit the IBSS blog at
http://ibssblog.wordpress.com/ to look at previous posts and to
see the wide range of topics discussed over recent months. |

You should prepare a blog post of approx 500 to 700 words referring to
material you have found on IBSS online which backs up your discussion of a
topical issue relating to the social sciences. |

Please prepare
your blog post as a Word document and email it by 10 April 2009 at the

Access to
IBSS online
In order for entrants to be able to carry
out searches on IBSS your institution will need to have access to the IBSS
online database.

UK HE institutions, some FE
colleges and central government departments
already have access to IBSS free of charge as a result of funding by the
ESRC – for access details visit your institution’s library website.

Schools and FE colleges,
which do not yet have access to IBSS, should email EBSCO who will arrange
for access to be set up for you free of charge; email:

Charities and
not-for-profit organisations,
which do not yet have access to IBSS, should email

who will arrange for you to
receive IBSS free trial details.

Announcement of prizes
Up to 5
prizes of £100 each, sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC),
will be awarded for the five best blog posts (as judged by the IBSS
competition panel). The winners of the competition will be notified by IBSS
by 24 April 2009.
IBSS reserves the right to use
the winning blog posts to promote IBSS on the IBSS blog and IBSS website and
to make minor amendments to the winning blog posts if necessary. Only
details of each winner’s name will be published with the blog posts (no
personal details, such as address, email and telephone number will be
publicised). It is a condition of entry into this competition that you agree
to these promotion requirements.

Festival of Social Science
This annual, weeklong
programme of events held across the UK is designed to communicate
information about the social sciences and how social science impacts on our
lives. The events take a variety of formats, from traditional lectures and
seminars, to exhibitions, film screenings and topical debates. Furthermore,
they are aimed at a range of different audiences, including policy makers,
business, the media, the general public and students of all ages.
