Brief description of competition
Undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers studying or working at UK HE/FE institutions or in UK governmental/commercial or charitable organisations are invited to enter the IBSS case study competition. Ten prizes of £300 each will be awarded for the case studies (of approx 500 words) which best demonstrate how IBSS has been used to find information on research topics in any of the core, interdisciplinary or supporting social science subjects covered by IBSS. Entrants should include details about searches carried out on IBSS and should highlight in particular how any of the unique features of IBSS, such as international, language and interdisciplinary coverage, have been particularly useful in their research. IBSS reserves the right to publicise details about the successful entries and winners as detailed below. Full entry details are given below.

Eligibility
Entrants should be undergraduates, postgraduates or researchers studying or working at UK HE/FE institutions or in UK governmental/commercial or charitable organisations. Entrants will only be able to take part if their institution has access to IBSS (either free of charge or by paid subscription).
How to enter
a. You should prepare a case study of approx 500 words demonstrating how you have used the International Bibliography of the Social Sciences to find material relevant to your chosen social science topic.
b. Topics should be related to any of the core, interdisciplinary or supporting social science subjects covered by IBSS (click here to view list). You can choose your own topic, e.g. related to a topical issue or to your own area of research. Alternatively, if you wish you can choose a topic based on the ESRC’s research priorities:

c. Please include the title of your research topic at the beginning of the case study. You should include details about a variety of searches carried out on IBSS and indicate the search terms and search fields you used. You can include screenshots, tables, lists, etc to illustrate the results of your searches. Additional marks will be awarded for case studies which highlight in particular how any of the unique features of IBSS, such as international, language and interdisciplinary coverage, have been particularly useful for research.

Announcement of prizes
Up to 10 prizes of £300 each, sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Ovid, will be awarded for the best case studies. The winners of the competition will be contacted by IBSS by telephone or email in mid June 2006. The results of the competition will also be announced on the IBSS website and in the June issue of the IBSS newsletter.
Promotion
IBSS reserves the right to amend, edit and use any of the winning case studies to promote IBSS and the prize competition, for example, on websites, in the press and in other publications. Only details of each winner’s name/institution/course will be published with the case studies (no personal details, such as address, email and telephone number will be publicised). It is a condition of entry into this competition that you agree to the promotion requirements set out above.
