Funding and support
The International Bibliography of the Social Sciences is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council
(ESRC) to provide access to IBSS to the UK higher education community
free of charge.
IBSS is produced at The London School of Economics and Political Science
(LSE) and receives support from LSE in terms of a wealth of
invaluable resources which are briefly described below.
For information about our funders see the information on these pages and
also click on the links above to visit their websites. IBSS contributes to
the corporate objectives of the ESRC and LSE which are briefly
described below.
ESRC
The Economic and Social Research Council's role is:
- to promote and support, by any means, high quality basic, strategic
and applied research and related postgraduate training in the social
sciences
- to advance knowledge and provide trained social scientists who meet
the needs of users and beneficiaries, thereby contributing to the
economic competitiveness of the United Kingdom, the effectiveness of
public services and policy, and the quality of life
- to provide advice on, and disseminate knowledge and promote public
understanding of the social sciences.
For further information on the ESRC visit their
website.
LSE
The London School of Economics and Political Science is the world's
leading social sciences institution for teaching and research. Based in the
heart of London, LSE has more than 7,000 full and part-time students from
more than 130 countries worldwide. Half of the students are undergraduates,
the other half postgraduates and researchers, studying in 18 departments and
over 30 research centres or institutes. LSE alumni and former staff include
12 Nobel Prize winners, 29 past or present Heads of State, 33 current UK MPs
and 32 current peers of the House of Lords.
An intellectual powerhouse, LSE's new strengths for the 21st century
include the study of human rights, globalisation, risk and business
management, new communications technologies, urban and regional policies and
new forms of governance. LSE aims to educate students to make a difference
to the world.
LSE and IBSS relationship
LSE jointly funds and also has editorial authority for the information
collated by the IBSS (Editorial policy, advisory
board and contributors). The International Bibliography of the Social
Sciences is located in the British
Library of Political and Economic Science, which is part of LSE.
IBSS benefits from the association with LSE not least because LSE holds a
pre-eminent position in the social sciences community as a nationally and
internationally recognised teaching and research institution. Expert
academic advice is always available if required. IBSS also benefits from
being an integral part of a large library with an international reputation
for research.
IBSS is indebted to LSE, the British Library of Political and Economic
Science and their management and staff for providing a wealth of support and
resources, including the following:
- academic material, including the selection of journal and monograph
material which is indexed in the bibliography
- extensive support by senior management, for example the Librarian and
Director of Information Services for the LSE, Jean Sykes, is also the
Director of the IBSS Online Resource Centre
- invaluable IT resources, including a network infrastructure and
specialised IT support
- excellent administrative support and resources, including accounting,
general administration, design, printing and PR
- staff development opportunities.
