Dr Marlies Glasius
Dr Marlies Glasius is a lecturer on the MSc in Management of Non-Governmental Organisations.
She has been a Research Officer at the Centre and managing editor of the Global Civil Society Yearbook since 2000 both at CCS and at the Centre for the Study of Global Governance. She studied international law as well as English literature at the University of Amsterdam, and holds a PhD with distinction in Human Rights from the University of Utrecht. In 1999 she published Foreign Policy on Human Rights: Its Influence on Indonesia under Soeharto. Her research concerns both the theory and the practice of global civil society and its relationship to international law, particularly human rights law. At present she is writing a book on global civil society influence on the establishment of the International Criminal Court.
Marlies is also Coordinator of the Study Group on Europe's Security Capabilities. Convened by Mary Kaldor at the request of EU Secretary-General Javier Solana, its purpose is to think about Europes security needs from the bottom-up, in terms of actual experience and likely situations in which security capabilities might be required, rather than from an institutional or geo-political perspective. In particular, it focuses on the Petersberg tasks and civil-military co-operation. The Study Group will present its report to Javier Solana in September 2004.
