Dr Helmut Anheier

Centennial Professor in the Department of Social Policy at the LSE and former Director of the Centre for Civil Society (1998 - 2002). He is currently also Director of the Center for Civil Society at the School of Public Policy and Social Research, University of California, UCLA, Los Angeles, USA. (See http://www.sppsr.ucla.edu/ccs/.)

Before joining the LSE, he was Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University, Director of the Centre for Social Research and Instruction at Rutgers, a Senior Research Associate at the Johns Hopkins University Institute for Policy Studies, where he co-directed the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit sector Project. 

Prior to this he was Social Affairs Officer at the United Nations and held appointments at Yale University, the University of Cologne and the Science Center in Berlin. Dr. Anheier holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Yale University. He is founding board member of the International Society for Third-Sector Research, founding editor of Voluntas, the international journal of research on nonprofit organisations, and member of the editorial board of several social science journals.

Dr. Anheier's work has focused on organizational studies, policy analysis and comparative sociology. He is involved in research on a comparative study on the size, scope and role of the private nonprofit sector in thirty developed and developing countries.

Dr. Anheier's publications include Private Funds—Public Purpose (Plenum, 1999); When Things Go Wrong—Organisational Failures and Breakdowns, Sage 1999; The Nonprofit Sector in Developing Countries (Manchester 1998), and The Emerging Sector – An Overview (Manchester University Press, 1996). He is author of numerous articles that have appeared in journals such as the American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, Annual Review of Sociology, Contemporary Sociology, Sociological Forum, International Sociology, World Development, Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics, Voluntas, Questions d'economie nationale, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Urban Affairs Quarterly, Zeitschrift f|r Soziologie, and Koelner Zeitschift fuer Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie.
