On 17-18 August 2009 a preparatory meeting on the project 'Comparative Studies on the New Immigrants from BRIC counties in America, Australia, Japan and the UK' (2009-12), was held in Shenyang, China. This project is funded by the Grant-in-aid scientific research, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The Principle Investigator of the project is Professor Lixing Cheng, Department of Human Environment and Information Technology, Nihon Fukushi University. Dr Xiangqun Chang, CCPN Coordinator, is one of the Co-Principle Investigators. She was conducting fieldwork in Shenyang, where she met Professor Lixing Chen; Professor Wei Wang, Faculty of Economics, Kagawa University; and Professor Jie Chen, International Exchange Centre, Ehime University, all from Japan.
During the meeting a numbers of issues on operating the project were discussed. It has been agreed that two conferences will be held in Tokyo and London in Spring 2011 and 2012 respectively. Professor Wei Wang will participate in the project in both Japan and the UK, where she will be a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies, SOAS, on her Sabbatical Leave from April 2010 to March 2011. Dr Chang will participate in the project in the UK, coordinate with co-researchers in Australia and USA, take responsibility for hosting the international conference in London in 2012, and co-edit the conference proceedings.

Call for Research Partners
We are calling for research partners from Australia and USA to participate in the project Comparative Studies on New Migrants from BRIC countries in America, Australia, Japan and the UK for the period 2009-12. This project is funded by the Grant-in-aid scientific research, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The Research target populations are: new immigrants of Chinese, Russian, Indian and Brazilian descent (i.e. from BRIC countries) in Australia and in the USA. The Principle Investigator of the project is Professor Lixing Cheng, Nihon Fukushi University. Dr Xiangqun Chang, Coordinator of China in Comparative Perspective Network (CCPN), London School of Economics and Political Science, is one of the co-Principle Investigators, who is responsible to coordinate with the Research Partners.
Expected work
To summaries basic information and questions relating to new immigrants of Chinese, Russian Indian, and Brazilian extraction based on documentary studies in USA and Australia
To arrange and execute the questionnaire survey and some interview surveys on Chinese, Russian, Indian and Brazilian immigrants in the field countries
To write a research report and paper on the study in the field countries
To participate in one or two conferences in 2011 in Tokyo and 2012 in London
To share all your the research survey data collected in Australia. Britain, Japan and U.S. for this project with other participants

Costs for questionnaire survey and some interview surveys
Costs for attending international conference in Japan (one or two times)
