26 November 2009 Creating the organisms that evolution forgot - An Any Questions? debate on synthetic biology 6pm, Old Theatre, London School of Economics
Bioengineers are trying to create synthetic organisms that do not occur naturally - is this an amazing scientific feat and harbinger of new medicines, more advanced biofuels and environmentally friendly pesticides, or is this something we should be worried about? This public debate will bring together leading actors in synthetic biology to answer questions put to them by the audience.
Panellists: Dr Phillip Campbell: Editor-in-Chief of Nature Professor Paul Freemont: Chair of Protein Crystallography, Head of the Division of Molecular Biosciences, and co-Director of the EPSRC Centre for Synthetic Biology, Imperial College Professor Richard Kitney: Professor of BioMedical Systems Engineering, Director of the Graduate School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Chairman of the Institute of Systems and Synthetic Biology, and co-Director of the EPSRC Centre for Synthetic Biology, Imperial College Professor Nikolas Rose: Martin White Professor of Sociology and Director of the BIOS Centre, LSE Mr Hugh Whittall: Director of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics Dr James Wilsdon: Director of the Science Policy Centre at the Royal Society.

Quentin Cooper presents the most listened to science series in the UK, The Material World on BBC Radio 4. He also fronts the recurring technology-in-action documentary series Connect and is one of the regular presenters for Pick of the Week.
