Future Mobility

Cornelia YzerFuture Mobility, a one-day expert forum jointly hosted by LSE Cities and The Innovation Centre for Mobility and Societal Change (InnoZ), in cooperation with LSE Enterprise Germany, brought together leading experts in future transport and mobility systems from the UK and Germany.

In her opening remarks Cornelia Yzer, the Berlin Senator for Economics, Technology and Research, drew from recent experiences of integrating energy and mobility in Berlin and illustrated the evolution and future trajectories of the concept of ‘Smart City Berlin’.

British and German perspectives on intelligent transport systems as well as trends and challenges of future mobility were offered by Dr Paul Zanelli, Transport Systems Catapult (London), and Professor Andreas Knie, InnoZ (Berlin). LSE’s Dr Philipp Rode and InnoZ’s Dr Christian Hoffmann further added to this comparative approach, and presented evidence from surveys undertaken in London and Berlin in order to understand the different patterns of urban mobility.

Martin Powell, Siemens (London), pointed to the importance of developing an integrated infrastructure for Future Cities, an analysis that was complemented by Dr Gabriel Ahlfeldt, SERC LSE, and Gorka Espiau, Young Foundation (London), who focused on policy innovation. Lilli Matson, Transport for London, offered an insightful practitioner’s perspective on the practices of integrated transport innovation in London.

Among others, Timothy Papandreou, San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority, added a global dimension to these British and German approaches, presenting insights on strategic planning and policy towards the development of ‘Sustainable Streets’ in San Francisco.

GroupThe forum was a platform for in-depth dialogue and knowledge exchange on future urban mobility and transport systems. It allowed leading experts to build the foundations for a community of transport innovators working on future mobility systems and smart urban infrastructure across science, industry, cities and government in the UK, Germany and beyond to address current global trends in shared mobility and sustainable urban transport systems.
