The British-German Dialogue

The British-German Dialogue (BGD) is a high-level forum run by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The series of dialogues take the form of private but open discussions with invited experts under Chatham House Rules.

The meetings of the BGD take place alternately in London and in Berlin. Invited experts each present about ten minutes of remarks on a current and lively issue before the discussion is opened up. The dialogue brings together some of LSE's most widely respected experts and other commentators and analysts, along with a wide range of stakeholders in the bilateral relationship drawn from the worlds of politics, media, public administration, think tanks and business, including young professionals.

The BGD is intended to facilitate an ongoing bilateral exchange of views and ideas, in a format which promotes focused and grounded discussion between opinion formers and decision-makers from inside and outside government. Its aims are ambitious: to help promote better understanding of British and German positions; to identify the strategic challenges which confront both countries; to generate practical suggestions for improving the efficiency of the bilateral relationship; and, crucially, to encourage synergies which will serve the interests of the United Kingdom and Germany both at the global level and at this important time in the development of the European Union.
