LSE Enterprise co-hosted the Future Energy Forum on "Progress in Reduction of СО₂ Еmission and Achieving the Energy Efficient Lifestyle" at the Astana EXPO 2017, on 10 and 11 August 2017.

This eighth edition of the Future Energy Forum, one of the central events of the EXPO 2017, provided a unique platform for global debates, with a focus on solutions for the reduction of industrial emissions.

The sessions were spread over two days, and included discussions on low-carbon and energy-efficient technologies and system-wide solutions, covering each aspect of a sustainable supply and production chain.

LSE research and expertise came to the fore in particular on day one, when Christian Thiel, LSE Enterprise, moderated two sessions on 'The Risks Associated with Not Adapting to a Non-fossil Future', which included keynote speeches by:

  • Dr Alina Averchenkova, Principal Research Fellow and Lead for Governance and Legislation at the LSE Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, who gave a speech on 'How Likely Is the Fossil-free Future? Global Decarbonisation Politics in the Post-Paris Era'.
  • Dr Lara Lázaro, Senior Analyst at Elcano Royal Institute, who gave a speech on 'Citizens and Climate Action'.
  • Dimitri Zenghelis, Principal Research Fellow at the LSE Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, who gave a speech on 'Driving Growth Through Clean Energy Innovation'.
  • Prof Paul Ekins, Director and Professor of Resources and Environmental Policy at UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources, who gave a speech on 'The Low-carbon Transition: Avoiding Existential Threat, Grasping Economic Opportunity'.

During the afternoon, Christian and the keynote speakers discussed whether we are moving towards a fossil-free energy future, with selected representatives from the audience, before enjoying a tour of the EXPO grounds.
