Or is it an idea; a way of thinking, of organising states in union? Is there such a thing as a "European identity"? And, in the midst of changing global patterns, can Europe resist the forces of fragmentation? In this short film, faculty of LSE's European Institute talk about what defines Europe, its limits and its future. The principal aim of the course is to provide a detailed knowledge of how national and EU institutions interact in European policy making. To achieve this the course is divided into two parts. The first will introduce principal theories of policy making along three core policy dimensions: agenda setting, decision making, policy implementation. In the second part the conceptual insights gained will be used to analyse a number of substantive policy areas. These will typically include: the single market, social and environmental policies, justice and home affairs policies, common agricultural policy, economic and monetary union, immigration and asylum policy, energy and climate change policy, and EU foreign policy.Dr Sara Hagemannhttp://www.lse.ac.uk/newsAndMedia/videoAndAudio/channels/europeanInstitute/player.aspx?id=23812014-04-15T12:00:00ZEU424 The Idea of EuropeContributor(s): Professor Maurice Fraser | This course examines the cultural and intellectual origins of Europe in Ancient Greece and Christendom; the emergence of a shared European cultural space in the Middle Ages and Renaissance; contested definitions of Europe's final frontier and eligibility for EU membership; rationales of empire and the distinction between 'civilisation' and 'barbarism'; the fissile interplay of rationalism and romanticism; the uses and abuses of instrumental reason; secularisation and the role of Christianity in the public space; the 'universal mission' of Europeans and the idea of rights; and definitions of the European 'project'.Professor Maurice Fraserhttp://www.lse.ac.uk/newsAndMedia/videoAndAudio/channels/europeanInstitute/player.aspx?id=23822014-04-15T12:00:00ZEU435 History and Theory of European IntegrationContributor(s): Dr Mareike Kleine | This course is an introduction to the causes and nature of European integration. The topic is presented from a historical, social scientific and normative perspective. We critically examine various theories of, and current debates about European integration by studying the process of integration, its effect on EU member states and third actors, and its constitutional character. The first part of the course analyses different stages in the integration process, asking why and how member states surrendered more and more power to European institutions. The second part discusses a number of big questions that this transfer of power raises. At the end of this course you will have gained an overview of the history of European integration, integration theories and their intellectual history, the political system of the European Union, and current public and scholarly debates about European Union politics.Dr Mareike Kleinehttp://www.lse.ac.uk/newsAndMedia/videoAndAudio/channels/europeanInstitute/player.aspx?id=23832014-04-15T12:00:00ZEU443 European Models of CapitalismContributor(s): Dr Robert Hancké | This course provides an assessment of the origins, internal logic and viability of the different ways of organising advanced capitalist political economies in Europe today.
