The Asia Reseach Centre has a history of engagement with Taiwan which can be traced back to the setting up of the Yu Kuo-Hua Chair in International Economics, with support from the Taiwan government, in 1993.

Research and dissemination related to the Taiwanese economy, politics and society have been ongoing. Recent workshops include Europe’s Experiences and the Developing Process of Cross-Taiwan Strait Relations|, organised with European Union Research Centre, Institute of International Relations, National Chengchi University, sponsored by Mainland Affairs Council, Executive Yuan and Civility and Peace Dialogue| hosted with the Taiwan Research Foundation, National Sun Yat-sen University, the East Asian Institute at National University of Singapore, with support from the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.

Various round table discussions have been organised at LSE with Taiwanese policy makers and academics to discuss economy and politics in Taiwan.

Professor Chris Hughes| has been studying Taiwan elections over many years. He organises workshops in Taiwan around the time of elections.

The Taiwan Research Programme| (TRP) is based within the ARC. It was set up in 2004 to provide a multi-disciplinary study of the cultural dimensions of global issues in relation with Taiwan. This programme is led by Professor Stephan Feuchtwang| and Dr Fang-Long Shih|.
