London Taiwan Seminar

Details of events taking place in the current term|

Archive of previous seminars|

The London Taiwan Seminar, initiated by Professor Stephan Feuchtwang with the assistance of Fang-Long Shih, has been held at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, since November 2000.

The London Taiwan Seminar brings together expertise on the study of culture and society in Taiwan. Topics addressed directly or indirectly in previous seminars include social geography, power and authority, language and ethnicity, kinship and gender, childhood and schooling, relatedness and friendship, rituals and texts, colonialism and post-colonialism, modernity and post-modernity, capitalism and development, nationalism, identity formation, indigeneity, social memory, religion and secularisation, tourism, consumption, media, and the environment.

We would encourage papers on any of these subject domains, or, even better, some innovative directions. Moreover, the Seminar encourages the development of new theoretical and methodological positions and perspectives that acknowledge the particular historical and cultural experiences of Taiwan.

We welcome multi-media presentations on any issue or aspect of the culture and society of Taiwan from established academics and postgraduate students. We also welcome informal presentations or works in progress. Speakers are expected to speak for 50 minutes; the two-hour slot that the Seminar occupies leaves ample space for questions and discussion. The purpose of the seminars is to provide a platform for academic dialogue and critical debate as well as to give constructive feedback to presenters. Outstanding papers may be considered for publication in the Journal Taiwan in Comparative Perspective.

The Seminar is organised by the LSE Taiwan Research Programme, usually chaired by Stuart Thompson and convened by Dr Fang-Long Shih. It is normally held on Thursday evenings, in term one and in term two, at the London School of Economics, Houghton Street, London WC2A 2AE.

If you would like to give a paper please submit an abstract of around 300 words and a profile of around 200 words to Dr Fang-Long Shih at f.shih@lse.ac.uk|.
