The India Observatory (IO), set up in 2006, is a Centre to develop, enhance and undertake multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and programmes related to India's economy, politics and society. It is involved in public policy engagement in and with India. The Centre also works in collaboration with international partners for generation and exchange of knowledge on India and its position in the world.
The Centre plays a vital role in sustaining and developing LSE's long standing partnership with India. It acts as a hub to renew, engage and develop strong links with Indian academic institutions, government and corporate bodies to further knowledge exchange and contribute to the debate on broader policy issues by promoting and supporting an active engagement with India.
The IO is located within the Institute of Global Affairs at LSE.
The India Observatory has been set up in partnership with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and State Bank of India (SBI), in honour of Dr IG Patel, an extremely distinguished Indian and internationally renowned economist, public servant, former director of LSE and a former governor of RBI.
