Tongxue Tan Profile

Dr Tongxue Tan is a specialist in the anthropology of rural China and the ethnology of Chinese minorities. His research focuses on peasant economies, village morality, grass-roots politics, and social consciousness and he has done long-term fieldwork in Hunan and Guangdong provinces. Dr Tan is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, and the secretary-general of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Ethnology at Colleges and Universities in the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.
Dr Tan’s current research deals with money, desire and social mentality in rural China. He will analyze the tensions and anxieties that people in rural China face when confronted with dilemmas in economics, politics, moralities, religions, family-lives and life-philosophies. The book manuscript he is working on is provisionally entitled ‘two-dimension-man’.
