Winton prizes

Winton donates a number of annual prizes for our undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes.

The Department of Statistics is grateful for the generous support of Winton in making these prizes available.

Winton is a global investment manager, specialising in the application of mathematical and scientific principles to analyse and trade financial markets. Empirical research lies at the heart of the company whose founder, David Harding, has a background in natural sciences. David is one of the pioneers of quantitative systematic trading in Europe and has more than 30 years of experience at the forefront of the industry.

Undergraduate prizes

The Winton Prize for academic excellence in statistics with financial applications

This prize will be awarded to two undergraduate statistics students who have taken the Stochastics and Actuarial Methods in Finance course (ST330) and achieved the highest weighted average marks. Two prizes of £500 will be awarded in the 2016-17 academic session. 

Postgraduate prizes

The Winton Prize for academic excellence in MSc Statistics/MSc Statistics (Financial Statistics)

This prize will be awarded to the MSc in Statistics or MSc in Statistics (Financial Statistics) student with the highest overall marks in their exams. One prize of £500 will be awarded in the 2016-17 academic session.

In the 2017/18 academic session this prize will also include the MSc in Statistics (Social Statistics).

The Winton Prize for best dissertation in MSc Statistics/MSc Statistics (Financial Statistics)

This prize will be awarded to the MSc in Statistics (Research) or MSc in Statistics (Financial Statistics) (Research) student with the highest mark in their dissertation. One prize of £500 will be awarded in the 2016-17 academic session.

In the 2017/18 academic session this prize will also include the MSc in Statistics (Social Statistics) (Research).

The Winton Prize for academic excellence in MSc Data Science

This prize will be awarded to the MSc in Data Science student with the highest overall marks in their exams. One prize of £500 will be awarded in the 2017-18 academic session.

The Winton Prize for best dissertation in MSc Data Science

This prize will be awarded to the MSc in Data Science student with the highest mark in their dissertation. One prize of £500 will be awarded in the 2017-18 academic session
