The Marshall Institute Lecture Series

A unique learning experience for LSE students, alumni and staff.

The Marshall Institute at LSE exists to increase the impact of private contributions to public benefit. To understand how philanthropic capital and entrepreneurial energy can contribute for social good. The Marshall Institute Lecture Series aims to introduce a number of the key questions facing private actors for public good.

Improving the world, making it more just and more sustainable is fundamental to most of us, irrespective of the career path we take. Knowing how to make a positive impact is difficult. Tough questions of measurement, impact, of the relationship between private and public actors, of market and state failure, rigour and experimentation proliferate and the sheer scale of the problems often seem overwhelming.

We invite you to an evening lecture series that will provide you with a critical understanding of these critical questions and some of the answers being proposed by current thinking in philanthropy and social entrepreneurship.

What will you learn?

The lecture series will introduce you to

  • the scope and diversity of philanthropy and social entrepreneurship

  • the role of philanthropy and social entrepreneurship in promoting innovation and social change

  • political debate about private action - whether the ethics of NGOs or the accountability of the large foundations

  • altruism as a powerful source of human motivation and action

  • the new world of social financing and social interventions, from social impact bonds to behavioural economics

A certificate of attendance will be issued to those attending five or more events.

Who can attend?

The lecture series is open to all LSE students as well as to LSE alumni and staff.

The six 90-minute sessions of the lecture series will take place at LSE on Tuesday evenings (18.30-20.00) in Michaelmas and Lent term 2016/17.
