Finding journal articles

Most of the time you should be able to find and access the articles you need through Library Search. However, we also provide access to powerful databases that can help you discover articles that are not available through Library Search, or even search engines like Google.

When we don't provide access to the full text of the articles you need you can request them through Interlending services

Top social science databases

  • Web Of Science - provides access to articles covering all aspects of the sciences, social sciences and humanities.
  • Scopus  - covers a wide range of science and social science subject areas including gender studies, women’s studies and LGBT issues. 
  • International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) - includes over 3 million bibliographic references dating back to 1951. 

Specialist subject databases

These databases focus more narrowly on specialist subject areas. They can be used to supplement the general social science resources listed above.

Specialist Economic Geography databases

  • ABI/INFORM complete -  articles from leading business databases and newspapers published since 1971. Includes materials on business location.
  • EconLit - produced by the American Economic Association covering all fields of economics from 1969 onwards. Feature: cross-search this database with a number of our other indexing services. Select the 'choose databases' option on the platform to see the full list.

Specialist Cities and Urban Geography databases

These databases focus more narrowly on geographic subject areas.

  • PAIS International -  covers public affairs, social policy and other social science subjects from 1972 onwards. It includes materials on city regeneration and urban policy worldwide.
  • SocINDEX - covers all aspects of sociology and urban studies published since 1908.  Feature: cross-search this database with a number of our other indexing services. Select the 'choose databases' option on the platform to see the full list.
  • CAB Direct - covers conditions in developing countries including urban economics and growth in these regions.

Specialist Environmental Policy and Economics databases

These databases focus more narrowly on geographic subject areas. 

  • Environmental impact - documents, journal articles, conference papers and reports examining the human impact on the environment including climate change, pollution and habitat loss. 
  • Greenfile - a multidisciplinary index of articles and reports covering all aspects of environmental policy, impact and conservation.   Feature: cross-search this database with a number of our other indexing services. Select the 'choose databases' option on the platform to see the full list.
  • PAIS International - It indexes the contents of journals covering public affairs, social policy and other social science subjects. Coverage is from 1972 onwards. It includes materials on environmental policy.

Find out about popular newspapers, policy sites and streaming media services.

Newspapers

Many newspaper websites offer free access. We provide you with additional access to searchable back files via the following subscription services:

  • Nexis  - contains the full text of a large number of UK and foreign newspapers from 1980 onwards. Updated daily.
  • Factiva  - has extensive English language and foreign coverage content. Emphasis upon business and trade news.
  • FT.com  - register with your LSE credentials and benefit from our institutional access.

Recent editions of foreign newspapers can be located via Nexis and Factiva.

Other specialist databases include:

  • Current Digest of the Post-Soviet Press - abstracts of newspaper stories translated from approximately 2001 onwards.
  • Mideastwire.com  - access to English translations and summaries of news stories appearing in the media of over 20 Arab countries, Iran and the Arab Diaspora.
  • Eastview Russian Databases  - access over 30 of the most influential Russian newspapers of Moscow and St. Petersburg, and 80 regional newspapers, Russian Duma Publications for parliamentary news and analysis, and the Universal Database of Statistical Publications.

Policy and legislation

Research often involves the consultation of government policy. Most departments have  websites where you can find the latest press releases, reports, regulations and statistical data. Some UK examples:

Many international organisations' websites provide access to reports, regulations and statistics. Key bodies are: 

Audiovisual material

  • Box of Broadcasts (UK Access only)  - a streaming TV service. Access TV and radio programmes from over 60 channels. Includes BBC TV and radio plus 10 foreign language channels. Content is from 2007 onwards. Transcripts are available for TV and radio news programmes. You can also search for TV Listings using the TRILT database.

Archives and special collections

Theses

  • Dissertations & Theses Global - an online database containing the full text of thousands of PhD from universities worldwide. It includes references to all UK and Irish doctoral theses produced since 1715 with full text content where available. If an item you need is not available online you can place a request for it through interlending services
  • LSE Theses Online - contains many full text LSE PhD theses. Older items that are not available online are available in the Library.

Country data

We provide access to a number of  general databases that contain country level economic and politics data that will be of value to researchers.

GIS data

Geographic Information Sources deal with land use, cartographic boundaries and similar categories

  • Digimap - view, annotate and print maps from a variety of geospatial data providers. LSE has access to current and historic Ordnance Survey maps, historical OS maps from the 1840s to the 1990s; and Land Cover maps from 2007, 2000 and 1997.
  • UK Data Service - provides access to some survey and boundary data sets.
  • LandScan - a global population database that shows geographical distribution of population at one-kilometer resolution over an average 24 hour period. 

Real estate markets

  • Business Source Complete and ABI/Inform - provide access to journal articles and industry analyses.
  • Orbis - has information on over 100 million companies worldwide, including company reports, balance sheets and details on market share.
  • Statista - provides reports and statistics on global markets. There is extensive coverage of real estate markets and markets for energy and renewables.
  • MarketLine - has profiles of companies and industries.

  •  Zetoc - use this service to set up alerts and receive tables of contents from your favourite journals. 
  • LSE Research Online - check for recent research from your academic department.
