Pay

Salaries are paid monthly in arrears by bank transfer. For appointments between bands 1 - 8, there is an incremental increase with every year of service up to the maximum for the band. (Salary Bands 9 and 10 are contribution-related.)

Salaries are increased each year to reflect the rise in the cost of living in line with the pay award negotiated nationally between the Universities and Colleges Employers’ Association and Higher Education unions.

Pensions

All research staff will have either the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) or the Superannuation Arrangements of the University of London (SAUL) available to them.

The Scheme offered will be determined by Salary Band, with those staff members employed at Salary Band 6 -10 being offered USS, and staff at Salary Band 1-5 being offered SAUL. Membership of these Schemes includes a number of benefits including death-in-service cover whilst an active member of the Scheme.

Both Schemes have two sections, both of which are 'defined benefit', meaning that the pension you receive is based on a set formula known at the point of saving.

Not sure which section applies to you? Take a look at the SAUL Eligibility section or watch the USS ‘Which Section?’ Video to find out more.
