Early career academics

Start your job search now:

Finding your first full academic post can be tricky and here at LSE we try to help promising fledgling academics find roles that help them to ‘bridge the gap’ and develop the experience they need to find academic posts in future.

Graduate Teaching Assistants

We frequently employ existing PhD students as Graduate Teaching Assistants to support the delivery of high quality teaching on our degree programmes and to enable them to gain valuable teaching experience.

If you are a current LSE PhD student interested in gaining experience flexibly around your own studies, enquire with relevant academic departments to find out about current, or forthcoming, needs in this area. These opportunities are only available for current PhD students and therefore do not appear on our external job site.

LSE Fellows

We also offer contract teaching posts for more established internal candidates who are normally working towards completing their PhD in the form of LSE fellowships.

In addition, we offer externally advertised LSE Fellow positions for more established internal or external candidates who have normally completed their PhDs. These posts offer a valuable entry level to an academic career. Although they carry a significant teaching role, post-Doctoral LSE Fellows are encouraged to continue to pursue their own research to develop a well-rounded CV with promise, if they wish to follow an academic career pathway. These posts are always offered as a fixed-term contract in order to be able to continue to offer these developmental opportunities on a rolling basis.

Entry-level research posts

In addition to the above, the School of course has a wealth of research appointments, including a significant number at an early post-doctorate stage (or for those still working towards their PhD).

Prospective academics may also wish to pursue a research focused pathway in their early career stage - see the Research career pages on this site which give more information about working at LSE as a researcher.
