Dr. Zack Cooper is a health economist at the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics. Zack's work focuses on assessing the impact of competition in hospital and insurance markets and analyzing the effect of financial incentives and payment reforms on health care delivery. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Chicago and did his Masters and PhD at the London School of Economics.
Zack's most recent work has examined the impact of patient choice and provider competition on clinical quality, hospital efficiency and equity in the English National Health Service. Early evidence from this research has been published in the Economic Journal and the British Medical Journal. Zack is currently working on a project assessing the impact of hospital and insurance market structure on provider reimbursement rates in the US. He is also launching a project with colleagues in the US and the Netherlands to assess and compare hospital performance in England, the United States and the Netherlands.
In addition to his academic work, Zack has written speeches for and advised several policy-makers and politicians. Zack writes regularly for the Huffington Post and he has published op-eds in the Guardian newspaper. Zack appears frequently in the popular press, including on the BBC, Sky News, ABC, CBS and National Public Radio. Zack's research has been cited in the Financial Times, the Times, the Telegraph, the Guardian, the Independent, the Washington Post, the Evening Standard, and the Economist.
