Professor Tony Barnett

Biography

Tony Barnett is Economic and Social Research Council  Professorial Research Fellow in LSE Health and Social Care in the Department of Social Policy and holds is an honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.  He studies the social sciences of infectious diseases.

He is an interdisciplinary social scientist with a background in economics, philosophy, social anthropology, sociology and political science.

Tony Barnett has studied the social and economic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic since 1986. In 1992, together with Piers Blaikie, he wrote AIDS in Africa: its present and future impact (Wiley, London and Guilford Press, New York). This was the world's first research based account of the social and economic effects of the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Since then, he has directed or undertaken more than 50 research projects and many Policy Research Training Workshops for senior professionals from governments, NGOs, bilateral and multilateral agencies in many African, European and Asian countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa, Ukraine, India, Nepal, Philippines.

In 2002, (with Alan Whiteside of the University of KwaZulu-Natal), he published the best selling book AIDS in the 21st Century: disease and globalisation, Palgrave Macmillan, London and New York 2002. A completely revised and updated 2nd edition of this book was published by Palgrave Macmillan in April 2006.

In 2003, he edited (with Jean-Paul Moatti and others), Economics of AIDS and Access to HIV/AIDS Care in Developing Countries: Issues and Challenges, Paris, Agence Nationale pour Recherche sur le Sida (ANRS), July 2003.

Tony Barnett is interested in the social science of HIV/AIDS, of kuru, of acute respiratory infections and most other infectious diseases.  He is Director of LSEAIDS.
