How do I apply for funding from the SSCR?
The SSCR will advertise all funding opportunities on its website at funding opportunities and through its mailing lists.
The first call for proposals has closed. Will there be more opportunities for funding?
The SSCR will be releasing further calls for proposals over the next few years. The next such call is expected in Spring 2010; see funding opportunities
Can I submit more than one proposal under a call for proposals?
Yes. Please note each proposal should form a separate submission and not be submitted in one document.
Can researchers based outside England apply for research funding?
In principle yes, but there would be clear obligations on the research team to:
-
demonstrate familiarity with current developments in English adult social care practice
-
demonstrate the transferability/applicability of the proposed study to English adult social care practice and for this to be reflected in the proposed dissemination arrangements.
Can NHS researchers apply for NIHR SSCR funding?
Yes, provided the research addresses the issue of social care practice in England.
Does the SSCR fund user-led research?
Yes the SSCR does fund user-led research, and any such proposals would be considered alongside other proposals received in line with the relevant selection criteria for the particular call for proposals (scientific quality, relevance to the School's programme, relevance to social care practice). In SSCR we are keen to encourage greater user and carer involvement in all aspects and stages of social care research.
Does the SSCR fund practitioner-led research?
Yes the SSCR does fund practitioner-led research, and any such proposals would be considered alongside other proposals received in line with the relevant selection criteria for the particular call for proposals.
Does the SSCR fund carer-led research?
Yes the SSCR does fund carer-led research, and any such proposals would be considered alongside other proposals received in line with the relevant selection criteria for the particular call for proposals.
Can the NIHR SSCR fund research training courses or programmes?
No, sadly the SSCR cannot do this. If you are employed by a local authority, contact the relevant training department for tailored address, or get in touch with your local university. Other options include courses run by the Open University.
Does the SSCR provide funding for PhDs?
The SSCR cannot provide funding for PhDs. Please see the Economic and Social Research Council's website (www.esrc.ac.uk) for possible funding options.
Is it possible for a local authority to obtain funding to commission research?
The SSCR is a direct commissioner of research and funds work with the organisation carrying out the work, not with a third party.
Can I discuss a research idea with a member of the SSCR before submitting it for funding?
Yes - contact Gill Hastings (g.hastings@lse.ac.uk) in the first instance.
Will the NIHR provide funding for social care organisations who participate in research, such as money to cover the costs of staff time when participating in interviews or collating data from files?
No, unless the studies are being funded by the SSCR. The NIHR is aware of these inequities that have already been raised with the NIHR.
