From 26-31 March 2011 thirty MSc students accompanied by Dr Fran Tonkiss and Dr Suzanne Hall visited Moscow to get an overview of the situation there, meet local experts and look in particular at the severe traffic problems which affect mobility and liveability in the city. They stayed at the massive Izmailovo Vega hotel on the northeastern outskirts of the city, built as part of a complex for the Soviet Olympics in 1980.
Their programme was put together by architect and urban designer Yuriy Milevskiy, who arranged meetings with Russian experts from the Institute for Architecture and Civil Engineering, Moscow State University of Civil Engineering; National Research University, Higher School of Economics, and Strelka Institute of Media, Architecture and Design, and helped co-ordinate site visits.
