Sylvia Chant, FRSA, FAcSS, is Professor of Development Geography and Director of the MSc in Urbanisation and Development. She has undertaken research on gender and development in Latin America since the 1980s, initially in Mexico and subsequently in Costa Rica. On the basis of fieldwork which diversified into the Philippines in the 1990s and Gambia in the 2000s, she has had a particular interest in the geographically-comparative analysis of women-headed households and the ‘feminisation of poverty’, especially in relation to urban areas. Sylvia is currently working with colleagues within and beyond the LSE on a new project on gender, poverty and well-being in Nicaragua, Gambia and the Philippines.
