Dr Ellen Helsper is Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor at the Media and Communications Department at the LSE. She is interested in inequalities in increasingly digital societies and digital literacy. Ellen is leading on a large international project ‘From Digital Skills to Tangible Outcomes’ which has a number of Latin American partners, including Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay. This project develops measures of digital engagement and takes a comparative approach to study the links between social and digital inequalities. She is also involved in the Latin American Kids Online project (part of the Global Kids Online Project) which focusses on young people’s engagement with technologies such as mobile phones and the internet and their parents and their own ability to navigate the opportunities and risks available so that their use leads to positive outcomes.
Ellen Helsper holds visiting professor positions at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, University of Twente, University of Southern California (Los Angeles), and New York University. She consults widely with government, industry and third sector organisations on the subjects of digital skills and engagement. Before becoming an academic she worked for media research companies in Chile, Mexico and the US.
