Dr Alejandra Irigoin

Dr Alejandra Irigoin, a native of Argentina, received her PhD in Economic History from the LSE in 2000. She has taught graduate and undergraduates in Argentina, Spain, USA and in Britain over the last six years, in both state and private universities and colleges. Her research delves in the political economy and monetary and macroeconomic history to understand the development of Latin America and the economic, social and political trajectory of the region in the long run.  Her dissertation analysed the first episode of inflation in Argentina in the 1820s which laid the political economic background for the design of modern institutions in Argentina.

Alejandra’s research has been published in various economic historical and history journals such as Economic History Review, Hispanic American Historical Review, Journal of Latin American Studies, Journal of Global and Journal of World History, Historia Mexicana, Journal of Iberian & Latin American Economic History- RHE and numerous book chapters in collective volumes. Alejandra is member of the editorial board of Economic History Review, Revista de Historia Economica, Journal of Latin American Studies, America Latina en la Historia Economica (Mexico). She has been invited as guest lecturer to Universidad de Valencia, Universita de Bologna and as visiting researcher to University of Texas Austin and El Colegio de Mexico. Some of her articles have been translated into Spanish in Mexico, Argentina and Peru. She is one of founders and one four convenors of the regular seminar Latin American History at the Institute of Historical Research – University of London. She has recently finished the introductory chapter ‘The Economic Aspects of the Chilean Independence for the forthcoming volume ‘Economic Problems and Economic History of Chile’ of the History of Chile 1810-2010 edited by the Universidad Adolfo Ibanez de Chile. Alejandra established the ongoing Latin American New Economic Historians, which annually gathers doctoral students on the field to discuss their research with expert academics.
