About me

Professor Ulrich Herbert's research focuses on contemporary history in European perspective. In October 2019, his latest book A History of Twentieth-Century Germany was published by Oxford UP in English.

Among other issues, he is particularly interested in the history of National Socialism and the Holocaust, on which he has published widely, as well as on the history of migration in the 19th and 20th centuries. Together with the Institute of Contemporary History and the Federal Archives, he is the editor of the 16-volume source edition The Persecution and Murder of the European Jews by Nazi Germany (Munich 2006 ff, English: Munich/Tel Aviv 2019 ff.).

During his stay in London, Professor Herbert will prepare a book on migration policy in Germany and Europe since the 1980s.

Professor Herbert received his PhD from the University of Essen in 1985 with a study on forced labor in Nazi Germany, and his habilitation from the university of Hagen in 1992 with a study on the SS-intellectual Werner Best. Afterwards he served as Director of the Forschungsstelle für Zeitgeschichte in Hamburg. In 1995 he assumed the chair for modern history at the University of Freiburg. From 2007 to 2013 he was Director of the School of History at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Study.

Professor Ulrich Herbert is the 2019/20 Gerda Henkel Visiting Professor
