Programme: MPA International Development
What were you doing before joining the LSE MPA programme?
Before the MPA, I studied social sciences in the Netherlands and Malaysia, with a focus on development issues. I also worked on NGO consulting projects in both Asia and Africa. The primary goal was to help mostly small organisations to overcome inefficiencies and to focus on what they do best. A significant component of that meant introducing simple technologies and IT systems.
Why did you choose to join the LSE’s MPA programme?
After having worked with and for NGOs my impression was that more systemic solutions are required to have a lasting impact in emerging countries. I increasingly thought that good institutions and public policies were needed in order to stimulate growth and sustainability. The MPA seemed to be a programme that offered the study of exactly that - studying and analysing public policy with a scientific methodology. In addition, the reputation of LSE's more economics-heavy approach as well as the prospect of a concrete consultancy 'Capstone' project attracted me to the programme.
What one piece of advice would you give to a future MPA student?
A huge benefit of the MPA are the people. So keep up with the reading and ask your classmates for help if needed, and make sure you have enough time to enjoy the social life!
