Alex is a Scotsman who works in London for Public Health England (PHE), an executive agency of the Department of Health. After a stint working in addictions research in Scotland, he has worked in addictions policy in England since 2006. In that time he has developed a strong reputation across Whitehall for being a leading expert in substance misuse public health issues; for leading, developing and delivering a high quality policy and information service and for effective strategic engagement and partnership working. Alex also currently holds the programme lead for supporting adults in English recovery services find stable housing and employment. As well as addictions and broader public health policy, he is particularly interested in housing, employment and wellbeing policy – and in the challenge of translating ‘what works’ into effective local delivery.
