Maria has seven years’ experience working as an operational research analyst for the UK’s Ministry for Environment and Exports Credit Agency. Operational researchers support policy making, strategy and operations in government using a wide range of analytical techniques. Maria currently leads three projects looking to improve modelling capability in the areas of waste, resource efficiency, air quality and noise. Prior to this, she led a team of consultants, academics and civil servants to build capability in the use of systems thinking and system dynamics modelling to support policy development. She has also worked on the implementation of new performance measurement systems, financial planning and portfolio management. Maria feels passionate about bringing objective, multidisciplinary and high quality evidence on effective government practices and policies to the wider public as a lever for better policy making and public sector reform. Maria originally trained as a physicist in Spain and holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Sussex. She has authored a number of academic papers and other work-related publications.
