International Growth Centre

Hugh is Country Programme Director at the International Growth Centre, based at LSE. The IGC aims to promote sustainable growth in developing countries by providing demand-led policy advice based on frontier research. Hugh leads the work of the IGC in over 14 countries. Prior to joining the IGC Hugh worked for a brief period as a policy and research director in government in South Africa, where he advised provincial cabinet on policy and was involved in establishing a delivery unit.  He has 10 years’ experience working in international development and international campaigning. During this time he has had the opportunity to do things as diverse as leading humanitarian teams in Darfur, designing long-term development projects in Mozambique and supporting African negotiators in the UN climate talks. He is a former policy advisor, Global Campaign Manager, Campaigns Director and organisational change lead at Oxfam.  Hugh originally trained as an earth scientist at the University of Cape Town and his first real job was as a geologist on an underground gold mine in South Africa.
