The Road to Democracy in Southern Europe: The International Dimension

International Workshop II

LSE IDEAS, Southern Europe International Affairs Programme

& Instituto de História Contemporânea

Friday, 22 November 2013

Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Torre B, Piso 7

OVERVIEW

The workshop will engage with fresh research on the fall of the Southern European dictatorships in Greece, Portugal and Spain and the early stages of the democratisation process that followed. It will adopt a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective. It aims to compare and contrast the three cases and highlight interactions with the wider international scene. The workshop will consist of three panels. These will cover the challenges and strategies of domestic and foreign actors. The day will culminate in a roundtable discussion examining the impact of the collapse of the dictatorships on the international system. This workshop follows on directly from the successful workshop ‘The international dimension of Southern European Dictatorships|:  Spain, Portugal and Greece in the Cold War system, 1968-1975’, which was held in London on 19 June 2012.
