Dr Artemy Kalinovsky is Assistant Professor of East European Studies at the University of Amsterdam and a Visiting Fellow at LSE IDEAS. He is author of A Long Goodbye: The Soviet Withdrawal from Afghanistan (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2011). His current research is on Soviet modernization projects in Central Asia.
