The Institute of Global Affairs (IGA) at the LSE is launching a series of debates on the Ukraine-Russia conflict and its wider implications. This inaugural discussion will focus on economic and political aspects of the conflict with a special emphasis on the inherent tensions between eastern Ukraine and the rest of the country. The war with massive loss of life, wide-spread material destruction and displacement of millions of people has further amplified these differences. What can be done to reduce tensions and re-build bridges within eastern Ukraine and between eastern Ukraine and the rest of the country? Would deeper EU integration amplify or mitigate conflicts between Ukraine's regions? What is Russia’s game – in the short and long term?

Speakers
Sergei Guriev is Professor of Economics at SciencesPo and Russia’s leading policy economist. He was Rector at the New Economic School in Moscow before having to go into exile in Paris.
Tymofei Mylovanov is Associate Professor of Economics at University of Pittsburgh. A native of Eastern Ukraine, he co-founded the influential blog http://voxukraine.blogspot.com

Erik Berglof is Director of the Institute of Global Affairs, LSE. Prior to taking on his current post he served as Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
