Dahrendorf Symposium 2013 Media Coverage

On 14 and 15 November, the Dahrendorf Symposium 2013| took place at the Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz in Berlin.

The symposium, second in series focused on the topic 'Changing the European Debate - Focus on Climate Change'. This British-German initiative, led by the LSE, Hertie School of Governance and Stiftung Mercator, honours Lord Ralf Dahrendorf as public intellectual, politician and European.

Under the lead of Arne Westad (Director, LSE Ideas) and Helmut Anheier (Dean, Hertie School of Governance), five transnational, interdisciplinary and cross-sector working groups discussed their research findings and policy proposals with leading personalities from politics, the economy, academia and civil society. The participants came from Germany, the United Kingdom and other European and non-European countries.

Keynote speakers included Connie Hedegaard (European Commissioner), Mary Robinson (President, Mary Robinson Foundation for Climate Justice, and former President, Republic of Ireland), Lord Wallace of Saltaire (Member of the House of Lords), Guenther Oettinger (European Commissioner), Cem Özdemir (National Chairman of the German Green Party), Ernst Ulrich von Weizsaecker (Co-Chair UNEP International Resource Panel), Norbert Roettgen (MP and former Federal Minister of the Environment and Nuclear Safety), Ottmar Edenhofer (Director Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change). 330 participants attended the event – delegates and strategic multipliers in their respective spheres of influence.
