Dr William McAllister introduced his work as Chief of the Special Projects Division in the Office of the Historian at the United States Department of State. He explained the archival sources with which he works and ways he makes them available to researchers. McAllister offered guidance on how to access this material in the most comprehensive and efficient way, using online tools and strategies for dealing with classified documents. In particular, he explained how to manipulate newer, especially electronic, archival sources. Attendees were then invited to do hands-on research in topics of specific interest to them while McAllister circulated among them to advise.

William B. McAllister serves as Chief of the Special Projects Division in the Office of the Historian at the United States Department of State, and is also Adjunct Associate Professor of the Graduate School Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

Roham Alvandi is Lecturer in International History at the LSE. His research focuses on the international history of Iran and the Persian Gulf during the Cold War.
