Israel Confronts its Past: the 'New' Historians and their Critics

israel_independence The 'new' or revisionist Israeli historiography that emerged in the late 1980s has generated some heated debate. This talk will review the sticking points in the arguments between the pro-Zionist version of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the version put forward by the 'new historians'. It will also explore the relationship between Israeli politics and the historiography of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Speakers

Avi Shlaim is a fellow of St Antony's College and a professor of international relations at the University of Oxford. His latest book is Israel and Palestine: reappraisals, revisions, refutations.

Fawaz Gerges is Professor of International Relations at LSE.
