Professor Marie Pierre Rey

This Paulsen Project lecture by Professor Marie-Pierre Rey, Professor of Russian and Soviet History at the University of Paris Pantheon Sorbonne, explored the personality, reign, and ideas of Tsar Alexander I.

Professor Rey argued that the era of Napoleonic conflict allowed the Russian Empire to emphasise its European identity. She also explored the Tsar's ideas of European balance of power and peace through Christian union and how they have shaped the modern international order.

The other speakers at this event were Professor Dominic Lieven and Chair Professor Janet Hartley, both co-editors of Russia and the Napoleonic Wars, the Palgrave volume that resulted from the Paulsen project.
