After its opening in 1869 the Suez Canal emerged as a symbol of globalisation where debates around the chances and dangers of worldwide interconnection were concentrated. Whereas the history of globalisation is usually told as a history of shortening distances and acceleration, at such a location, issues such as epidemic disease, anticolonial activism or the treatment of migrants without resources brought the dilemmas of globalisation to the fore. This led to an attempt to distinguish between different forms of mobility and to develop new tools for controlling some of them while facilitating others.

Dr Valeska Huber is Research Fellow in Colonial History at the German Historical Institute London. Previously she was a lecturer in Modern History at the University of Konstanz (Germany) and a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University. Valeska is the author of Channelling Mobilities: Migration and Globalisation in the Suez Canal Region and Beyond.
