Michael Cottakis is HO Research Assistant. He holds an Msc in European Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and BA in Classics from Royal Holloway, University of London. He is also Director of the 1989 Generation Initiative, an EU-themed think tank, based at the European Institute since 2016. Michael founded the Initiative as a student at the LSE. It has since expanded across Europe, with branches in 5 different cities. He did his Master’s in EU Politics at the European Institute before staying on as Research Assistant to Kevin Featherstone at the Hellenic Observatory and latterly Research Officer working on the LSE European Institute’s Generation Brexit project. He has written articles and op-eds for publications including the Financial Times, Washington Post, the EU Observer and Kathimerini, and has made various television appearances including for TRT World and ERT.
He is a PhD student at the European Institute, where his research explores different patterns of effects of financial bailout programmes on private-sector entrepreneurship, focusing in particular on the cases of Greece and Portugal. He speaks seven languages including Greek, Turkish, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
