The 6th HO PhD Symposium on Contemporary Greece and Cyprus

6-7 June 2013

This year the Organising Committee received a total of 77 applications of which 70 were accepted and 7 were rejected. In the end a total of 55 papers were presented following several late- withdrawals. The presentations were divided in 20 panels which were grouped in 4 sessions over 2 days. In total, 58 doctoral research students had the opportunity to present their papers and discuss their work in dedicated panels which covered a wide range of subject areas and interests. The panel presentations were followed by a discussion which was chaired by an established academic with an expertise in the particular field. This allowed a guided discussion where presenters were able to receive feedback both from an informed audience and from an expert in their narrower subject area.

Traditionally, the HO PhD Symposium is also punctuated by plenary sessions in which we invite notable academics to speak about topical issues in contemporary social science research (related to Greece and Cyprus).

This year 2 plenary sessions were given: one by Professor Kevin Featherstone (Director of the Hellenic Observatory) on ‘Research Design and PhD’s on Contemporary Greece’ - a session which was much appreciated by PhD students and the second by Professor Costas Lapavitsas (Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Law & Social Sciences from SOAS, University of London) on the Eurozone crisis and its causes, with suggested effective therapies on the crisis. This second plenary session was chaired and commented by Professor Achilleas Mitsos, Professor of International Economic Relations, University of the Aegean, Former Director General for Research, European Commission and Secretary General for Research, Greek Ministry of Education.

The Symposium also included the opportunity for the students to meet one another and interact both at the morning’s registration session and at the wine reception which was hosted at the end of the day.

The feedback received from the participants, the keynote speakers as well as the chairmen was positive. Overall we believe that the event fulfilled its academic objectives and was successfully organised.

The PhD Symposium has become a central event in the Hellenic Observatory’s calendar and continues to attract large numbers of highly enthusiastic students to participate in its panels and plenary sessions; we feel it has become one of the most important international meetings for PhD students working on contemporary Greece in the social sciences.

Supporters:
We are grateful to the A.G. Leventis Foundation for sponsoring the event.
