Britain had its warmest weather between January and September this year since records began, according to new Met Office figures.

Every month so far this year, except August, has been warmer than average while September was the driest since data was first collected in 1910.

At the same time, unprecedented winter rainfall made the eight-month period between January and September the sixth wettest since records began.

Bob Ward, a director at Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, said: “This is further evidence of the impact of climate change on the UK.

“The UK’s seven warmest years on record, and four of its five wettest years, have occurred from 2000 onwards, not including 2014.”
