The history of art and literature is a history of unrequited love, reminding us of the extraordinary human capacity to transform suffering into beauty. Unrequited love also serves as a reminder of the tragic nature of human experience. We explore responses to unrequited love from philosophy, psychoanalysis, and art. Should we mourn or celebrate it? What can it teach us about ourselves? Is anyone to blame? In this event, three speakers address unrequited love through philosophy, psychoanalysis and art.

Ulrika Carlsson is Assistant Professor in Philosophy, National Research University, Higher School of Economics, Russia.

Stephen Grosz is a psychoanalyst and author.

Erin Plunkett is a Teaching Fellow, Royal Holloway, University of London.

Danielle Sands (@DanielleCSands) is a Lecturer in Comparative Literature and Culture at Royal Holloway, University of London and a Forum for European Philosophy Fellow.

The Forum for European Philosophy (@ForumPhilosophy) is an educational charity that organises a full and varied programme of philosophy and interdisciplinary events in the UK.
